Appeals court denies man new trial in murder of Ronald Ross

WAUSAU, WI (WTAQ) - A Minnesota man lost his effort Tuesday to win a new trial for the murder of a man whose body was left next to a logging road in western Wisconsin over 12 years ago.

Jeffrey Burr, who’s now 27, said he was entitled to a new trial because of newly-discovered evidence.

The state’s Third District Appellate Court in Wausau said it’s not likely that the new evidence would find Burr innocent. That’s because it involves double-hearsay, and therefore it would not be admissible by a trial judge.

Burr was one of three people charged in the death of 51-year-old Ronald Ross of Oakdale Minnesota.

Ross was at the Treasure Island Casino in Red Wing, before he left with a group to go to a party. Loggers later found his partially-clothed body on a trail near Lund in Pepin County in March of 2001.

Police said at the time that Ross was beaten at one of the suspects’ homes in Minnesota, and was then transported across the Mississippi River to Wisconsin where he died.

Burr was 15 at the time. He was sentenced to life with no chance of a supervised release for 60 years.
