MADISON (WSAU-Wheeler News) A former researcher for the Medical College of Wisconsin will be sentenced August sixth, after he pleaded guilty yesterday to stealing a potential cancer-fighting chemical. 42-year-old Hua Jun Zhao also stole research data from the Milwaukee school. He transferred the information to his own computer, apparently hoping to portray the data and the chemical as his own in China where he also serves as a college professor.
Federal Judge Charles Clevert accepted a plea deal. Charges of computer fraud and lying to a federal agent were dropped, and Zhao was convicted of a lesser count of accessing a computer without authorization.
Zhao is a Chinese national and a permanent U-S resident. Officials said he could be deported. He’s been in jail since March, and was fired from the Medical College on March 15th after working there for two years.
