Hay made by farmers over July 4th weekend

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin farmers finally got a chance to make hay during the 4th of July week.

Just over six days were suitable for field work. Officials said 92 percent of the first hay crop was harvested by Sunday, 15 percent more than the week before. 14 percent of the second crop has also been harvested.

The dry weather also gave the corn a chance to grow. 98 percent of the crop has emerged. The average height is 31 inches, but that varies even within fields. 63 percent of the Wisconsin corn is good to excellent, and 27 percent is fair.

All but 3 percent of the soybean crop is in the ground, and 93 percent has emerged. 93 percent of the beans are rated fair to excellent.

Around three-fourths of Wisconsin fields have adequate moisture, and about one-fifth have surplus moisture.

Another wave of showers and thunderstorms is due in Tuesday and Tuesday night. Dry weather returns Wednesday.
