City leaders, developer meet about Clarion Hotel in downtown Green Bay

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay city leaders are meeting with Edgewater Resources Tuesday regarding their interest in redeveloping the downtown riverfront Clarion Hotel.

A couple weeks ago, the city council delayed a vote on deal for the city owned hotel, after Edgewater came in at the 11th hour talking about a larger investment.

The Clarion was envisioned to be a mid-tier hotel that wouldn’t compete with the Hyatt or future Hotel Northland.  But Edgewater is talking about a $10-15 million investment and establishing a four star hotel.

Community Development Director Rob Strong Edgewater needs to determine what kind of market there is here.  Strong says the numbers show the downtown can’t support three four-star hotels.

In addition, with a deal with a developer for the Hotel Northland still being worked out, Strong says they and other hotels in the downtown have to watching this very closely.

Mayor Jim Schmitt wants the current deal to move forward.

Schmitt said  “they (Edgewater) seem like they are a great developer, and I think there is opportunities for them in the city of Green Bay, but with the timing and finances, I just don’t think this is a good spot for them.”

Schmitt says he is open to what Edgewater has to say and willing give them a listen.
