The creator and star of the comedic drama, who earlier this month (Jan13) picked up two Golden Globe Awards for her work, cast her real-life mother, designer Laurie Simmons, in a cameo during an episode that aired in America last week (13Jan13).
But Dunham admits she regretted her decision almost immediately because Simmons wasn't good at taking direction.
During an appearance on U.S. talk show Live! With Kelly and Michael on Friday (25Jan13), she said, ""My mum was in the show. She had her cameo last week. I thought she was great, (but) it was sure hard enough trying to get her to turn in a performance that was anything close to what I'd ask for.
""She was definitely taking liberties like no other actress I've worked with in this business. But she was a delight, and I mean, she's my mum, so she's allowed (to act up). I mean, she carried me in her body for what I believe was nine months.""
And Simmons jokes to Vanity Fair magazine that the 26 year old often lost her temper when it came to directing mum: ""She kind of uses a shorthand with me that's like, 'Mum, that sucks. Mum, be quiet. Mum, scream.' You know, she just kind of shouts commands at me that she really wouldn't dare to do with any other actor. So that's OK.""
