Adele is all set to sing her Oscar-nominated James Bond theme "Skyfall" at this year's Academy Awards, which will mark her first U.S. TV performance since last year's Grammys. But while "Skyfall" may be the first Bond theme Adele's ever written, the movie of the same name certainly wasn't her first experience with 007.
Depending on how old you are, your perception of James Bond is usually based on who played him in the first Bond movie you ever saw. For Adele, that wasn't Daniel Craig , the current Bond -- it was the guy who came before.
"The first Bond film that I watched, it was definitely a Pierce Brosnan one because I'm only 24, so I don't really go back that far with the old gold classics," she laughs. "I can't remember the one it was actually. It was the one where he's on the speedboat going down the River Thames."
That would be The World Is Not Enough , which was the third Bond film to star Brosnan. He made one more, 2002's Die Another Day , and then vacated the role. Die Another Day' s theme song was recorded by Madonna , and it was the most recent Bond theme to hit the top 10 before "Skyfall" came along.
Adele says she much prefers Craig in the role of 007. "I think he's so edgy as Bond and has completely turned the vibe around of Bond and for the better, I think," says the singer, who also describes his Bond films as "elegant."
"So, Pierce Brosnan was my first Bond and Daniel Craig will be my Bond forever!" she laughs.
The Oscars are planning a special James Bond segment in the show, so perhaps Adele will be able to learn about the other actors who played the role: there are four besides Brosnan and Craig.
By the way, Adele said of her upcoming Academy Awards performance, "It's an honor to be nominated and terrifyingly wonderful to be singing in front of people who have captured my imagination over and over again." The Oscars will air February 24 on ABC.
"Skyfall" is the first Bond theme to be nominated for an Oscar since "For Your Eyes Only" in 1981.
