8th District Congressman Reid Ribble proposes sequester flexibility

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - 8th District Congressman Reid Ribble has introduced a bill he says would give the federal government more flexibility in making the required cuts under the sequestration, which is set to take effect on Friday.

Should lawmakers not reach a compromise by March 1, government agencies will have to begin cutting expenses by $85 billion over the next 7 months.

According to a White House report, Wisconsin would lose nearly $29 million in federal funding and grants if the sequester happens. The Obama administration has released state-by-state lists of specific programs that would face cuts under the sequestration plan.

Ribble, the Shorewood Republican, has introduced a bill aimed at allowing government departments more flexibility to transfer funds from the spending accounts they control.

“This measure will help spare the programs that are beneficial, while allowing managers to trim the areas that are less essential,” Ribble said in a news release. “We are never going to trim the fat with an across-the-board cut. Pinpointing areas of waste is where our attention is needed and this bill will help that effort.”

U.S. Rep. Tom Petri (R-6th District) is a co-sponsor of the bill.
