's Hollywood round moved into a second week Wednesday night with the girls competing for a spot among the top 40 contestants. Judges
were on hand to choose who made it and who got sent home. Here's what happened:
The girls came out in groups of 10 to sing a capella in the first phase of this round. Since there were many more girls than guys at this point, the judges had to make a lot of cuts right off the bat. Angela Miller and mariachi singer Victoria Acosta made it through in the first group, but anorexia survivor Mariah Pulice got the axe.
Country hopefuls Rachel Hale and Janelle Arthur went head-to-head and both made it to the next group round. Candice Glover impressed the judges for a pass to the next round, singing a song from Christina Aguilera 's catalog called "Impossible." One-named singer Isabelle earned approval from the judges too.
Kez Ban didn't really fit in with the other girls, but she'd been hooting and hollering for the other contestants before her audition all the same. Her voice was shot from all the screaming. Kez Ban got a pass to the next round though. San Diego auditions standout Briana Oakley was in that group too, and she sailed through to the group round.
As the group round got under way, the producers let them know they would be assigned to groups. Janelle Arthur, Kez Ban, Angela Miller and Breanna Steer had trouble picking a song in the beginning, and it went downhill from there. Kez Ban just didn't fit in with the other girls, and she eventually left the group to find some food. After the audition with The Ronettes ' "Be My Baby," Nick gave the group a standing ovation, and they all made it through to the solo round.
Isabelle, Lauren Bettes , Zoanette Johnson and Erin Christine had trouble finding common ground from the beginning. Zoanette didn't feel she fit in with other country-flavored members of her group. Zoanette turned things around and came on strong singing "Knock on Wood" by Eddie Floyd . Lauren was the only one cut at this point.
Brandy Neelley , Kree Harrison , Britnee Kellogg and Haley Davis picked a song quickly, but they fell apart once they started working up the Dixie Chicks ' "Sin Wagon" in rehearsals. The judges didn't like that Haley kept looking at the lyrics on her hand and left her group mates early the night before. In the end, Brandy was the only one who didn't make it through.
Candice Glover, Melinda Ademi , Denise Jackson and Kamaria Ousley showed off their sweet harmonies with Blu Cantrell 's "Hit 'em Up Style (Oops!)." Keith said it was a great song choice, and they all went on to the solo round.
Morgan Leigh Boberg , Lauren Mink and Brandy Hotard 's group went country with the Dixie Chicks' "Sin Wagon," and Nicki said they did a "mighty fine job." They all went through to the solo round.
Savannah Votion appointed herself group leader and assigned harmonies to her teammates Lizz Weiss , Daysia Hall and J'Leigh Chauvin . They made a big mess of Gotye 's "Somebody That I Used to Know," and Daysia was the only one that made it through.
Janel Stinney had a hard time working with her fellow group members Kriss Mincey and Craistabel Clack . While they delivered the lyrics to The Band Perry 's "If I Die Young," Janel chose to simply hum her way through it. When the judges asked her why she didn't rehearse with the group, Janel broke down in tears, saying she didn't feel like she fit in. Nicki championed Janel and the rest of the group. In the end, all four of them advanced to the solo round.
Kiara Lanier , Tenna Torres and Saretha Guinn 's group auditioned together with Estelle 's "American Boy," and the judges called it painful, and Nicki said she forgot what she loved about them before. Saretha was the only one who didn't make it in the end.
Courtney Calle , Shira Gavrielov , Liz Bills and Alisha Dixon had trouble because Liz kept wandering off. They auditioned with Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," and Randy looked horrified during the performance. Though the rest of the girls hated Liz, she was the only one the judges sent on to the next round.
Stephanie Schimel , Alex Delaney , Kalli Therinae and Holly Miller decided on the Gotye song at the last minute, and some of them wrote the lyrics on their hands to remember it. Randy wasn't happy with the performance, and Stephanie and Holly were the only ones to go forward.
American Idol returns Thursday night at 8 p.m. Eastern time on Fox, with the girls competing in the solo round.
