City Council approves new GB Police Chief to live 20 minutes outside of city

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Green Bay City Council approved an exemption for the new Police Chief to live outside the city limits at Tuesday night’s meeting.

City ordinance requires department heads to live in the city, but Interim Police Chief Tom Molitor had moved away to Oconto County when he retired in 2011.

Molitor said at the beginning of the interview process with the Police and Fire Commission that he would not move back.  He purchased what he called his "retirement home" in 2005 and it was worth less now than he paid for it.

Molitor was Assistant Chief until his retirement, and then came back to fill in as chief in mid-2012 when Jim Arts left to head security for the Tennessee Titans.

The city council voted 9-3 to grant Molitor a waiver after more than an hour and half of discussion, debate and high praise from fellow officers and the Brown County District Attorney’s office.

Mayor Jim Schmitt when to bat for Molitor saying he was the best candidate period and in the process took some heat because of his changing position on the city’s residency rule.

Just a couple months ago and against the Mayor’s strong opposition against it, the city council dropped the rule for city workers, but still required department heads to live in the city.

Molitor wouldn’t say how long he would commit to serving as chief.

The position pay a little over $102,000 a year.
