GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay Interim Police Chief Tom Molitor has been offered the chief job on a permanent basis, but only if he gets an exception from the city’s residency rule.

Molitor's request to live 20 minutes outside the city is on the city council agenda for Tuesday night.

Two weeks ago, the Personnel Committee voted down the request, and did not recommend granting an exception to the city’s ordinance that states department heads must live in the city.

Some Alderman on the committee took issue that the Police and Fire Commission, who moved Molitor forward even though he refused to move back in the city as a condition of the job.

Molitor retired in 2011, but bought home years earlier in Oconto County.

However, that home is underwater and is worth less then he bought it for.

Mayor Jim Schmitt is backing Molitor's request, which is a big change of heart from just a few months ago when Schmitt argued city workers should live in the city.   Schmitt says Molitor is the best candidate for the job.

Molitor was Assistant Police Chief up until his retirement.  He has been with Green Bay police since he was first hired as a cadet in 1980.

If the full city council votes against Molitor’s request, the Police and Fire Commission does have another police chief finalist in mind.
