Wisconsin Congressional delegation urges Sebelius to extend HIRSP

Six of Wisconsin’s Members of Congress are urging the United States Health and Human Services Secretary to extend a current form of insurance to help America’s most vulnerable group of people affected by the new healthcare law.

It’s called the Health Insurance Risk Sharing Plan, or HIRSP. Six Democrats and Republicans from Wisconsin are urging Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to extend the federal program through March 31st of next year.

In Wisconsin, Governor Scott Walker signed legislation this Friday to extend coverage for Wisconsinites now on the HIRSP, but critics of that legislation say another group of low income people still get no coverage for three months.

7th District Republican Congressman Sean Duffy says "Not offering this extension nationwide could leave some of our poorest and most medically vulnerable Americans without coverage. These individuals should not lose their health care coverage due to technical difficulties.”

The letter to Sebelius was signed by Duffy as well as 1st District Republican Paul Ryan, 3rd District Democrat Ron Kind, 5th District Republican Jim Sensenbrenner, 6th District Republican Tom Petri, and 8th District Republican Reid Ribble.
