MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- Gogebic Taconite has submitted a revised and scaled back proposal for sampling ore at the proposed Penokee Hills mining site.
Originally, the mining company was planning to excavate about four thousand tons of rock at five locations. Now, Gogebic Taconite is proposing to remove ore sample from three sites and only blast if they need additional material they cannot get with traditional excavation equipment.
The mining company submitted the revised plan last week, and the Department of Natural Resources released it today. DNR officials must now review the new sampling plan and indicate what permits will be needed before Gogebic can proceed.
