Dux Get State Title, Blackhawks and Griffins Win and Bulls Lose

UNDATED (WHTC) -- The Dux have done it again, bringing home another state championship after beating DeWitt 34-27 for the Division 3 Title at Ford Field.  Zeeland West scored the first 22 points of the game, which included an 80-yard touchdown run by Danny Bauder.  The Dux had a total of 441 rushing yards, with much of the blocking for those runs coming from 6-foot-5, 300-pound Jordan Van Dort.

The college football season should continue for two West Michigan teams.  The Grand Valley State University Lakers, the underdogs to top-seeded Colorado State-Pueblo, had a second-round playoff victory, beating Colorado State-Pueblo, 34-30.  The Lakers, 11-2 on the season, will host West Texas A & M next Saturday.  Central Michigan could get a bowl invitation after beating Eastern Michigan 42-10.

An exciting game took place in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon but Ohio State beat Michigan, 42-41.  The lead changed several times during the game.  The Wolverines scored a touchdown with little time left in the game when, according to Michigan players, Brady Hoke asked the seniors if they wanted to go for two points.  Devin Gardner's two-point conversion pass was intercepted by Tyvis Powell at the goal line and the third-ranked Buckeyes held on for a thrilling 42-41 win over the Wolverines in another classic edition of the annual rivalry from Michigan Stadium.

11th-ranked Michigan State completed an undefeated Big Ten regular season with a 14-3 victory over Minnesota at Spartan Stadium.  Michigan State (11-1, 8-0 Big Ten) won its final eight games for its third unbeaten Big Ten regular season and first since accomplishing the feat in 1965 and 1966. The Spartans' lone loss came Sept. 21 in a 17-13 loss at Notre Dame.  Next week's Big Ten championship game is against Ohio State.

 In the NFL, the Lions have the day off after stomping Green Bay on Thanksgiving Day, 40-10.  The bears are on the road today, taking on the Vikings at Mall of America Field in Minnesota.  Sunday Night Football coverage on 1450 WHTC gets started at 7:30 P.M. with the New York Giants in Washington to take on the Redskins.

The Flying Dutchmen tied for second place in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic, after losing to Cornerstone on Saturday, 79-73.  Cornerstone finished first in the Tournament.  Next weekend, Hope takes part in the MIAA-College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin Challenge.  The Flying Dutchmen play Wheaton on Friday and Carthage on Saturday.  Both games will be on 92 7 the Van.

 A dominating first half led the Grand Valley State men's basketball team to an 83-69 victory in non-conference action over Cedarville on Saturday afternoon.  The Lakers are now 3-0 on the season.  GVSU will be back in action on Thursday (Dec. 5) evening, when the Lakers open GLIAC play against Ashland at Grand Rapids Community College's Ford Fieldhouse.

 Central Michigan beat out Jacksonville State, 66-61 on Saturday.  Central Michigan, now 5-3, travel to Illinois next Saturday to take on SIU Edwardsville.

The Broncos wrapped up a four game home stand, topping Cornell 83-70 at University Arena on Friday.  West Michigan travels to Evanston, IL later this week for a game against Northwestern on Saturday.

 The #22 Michigan Wolverines sailed to a win over Coppin State on Friday, 87-45.  On Tuesday, the Wolverines will be in North Carolina to face #6 Duke.

 The #1 Michigan State Spartans trounced Mount St. Mary’s, 98-65.  They’ll face is No. 16 North Carolina on Wednesday as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

The Pistons lost at the Palace on Friday to the Lakers, 106-102.  Rodney Stuckey had 22 points, while Josh Smith pulled down 19 boards for Detroit, which has dropped four of its last six tilts. This afternoon, Detroit hosts the Philadelphia 76ers at the Palace.

The Bulls finished their road trip Saturday night with a loss to Cleveland, 97-93.  Chicago hosts the New Orleans Pelicans at the United Center on Monday night.

The Detroit Red Wings skated to a 5-0 rout of the skidding New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum on Friday.  The Red Wings are in Ottawa to take on the Senators this afternoon.  Game coverage on 1450 WHTC begins at 5:10 P.M.

Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa both had a goal and an assist Saturday and the Chicago Blackhawks pushed their winning streak to six games with a 5-2 decision over the Phoenix Coyotes.  Their next game is on Tuesday in Dallas against the Stars.

Behind two goals by Patrick Eaves and 33 saves from Tom McCollum, the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday rolled to their fifth straight win overall and their sixth in a row at home, a 5-1 thrashing of the Texas Stars at Van Andel Arena.  The Griffins continue a seven-game homestand next weekend when the Rochester Americans come to town for a Friday-Saturday set.
