School voucher lottery: Round one done

by

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has notified the parents of children who have the first school choice vouchers. In a report from Watchdog Wisconsin Reporter, five hundred notifications were sent, and the parents now have five business days to accept or decline the voucher offers.

The report says if any vouchers are declined, the Department of Public Instruction will notify parents who are next on the list until all available seats are filled.

Siblings of other school choice students do get a preference in the lottery. There are also other guidelines for awarding the vouchers. The DPI cannot exceed a school’s voucher limit per grade level, and the DPI cannot award vouchers in numbers that take away over one percent of the public school district’s enrollment.

The report says there may be additional complications if the voucher lottery isn’t completed until October. Some schools may miss out on voucher payments for the first part of the school year, because the third Friday in September school census is part of the formula, and the voucher payments cannot be prorated because the student’s enrollment cannot be verified by that census.
