ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) - The Austin Straubel International Airport cut the ribbon Wednesday on a new state of the art Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Facility.

The 20,000 square foot, $9.5 million facility is quadruple the size of their old one and more centrally located for better response and an expanding airport.

Airport Director Tom Miller says they can now house their 3,000 gallon trucks and equipment.

Should a crash take place, responders have to be on scene within three minutes.

The building also responds, by opening the garage doors, turning lights on, and turning kitchen appliances off.

The facility is staffed by a dozen public safety officers and has sleeping quarters, a kitchen, gym, locker rooms, high efficiency lighting, and full flight line views of the airport.
