Prosecutors expect to continue calling witnesses in Schaffhausen hearing next week

ST. CROIX COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Prosecutors expect to keep calling witnesses into next week, as they try to send Aaron Schaffhausen to prison for killing his three daughters in River Falls.

The defendant has pleaded guilty to homicide and attempted arson, and a trial to determine if he was sane is nearing the end of its second week.

Thursday, River Falls officer Christopher Kober said he and his fellow responders ran outside the Schaffhausen home as soon as they found the girls’ bodies. That’s because the house smelled of gasoline, and police were concerned that it could blow up.

Employees of a bar in St. Paul said Schaffhausen had two Bloody Marys and a beer in the hours before the killings. But toxicologist Amanda Hanson said the defendant was not impaired. The amount of his alcohol was below the level for intoxication, and no drugs were found in his system.

Also, a credit union employee testified that Schaffhausen withdrew $1,000 from his account the day before the slayings. Prosecutors said he had $800 on him when he turned himself in – and they said he might have thought about fleeing.
