MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin’s milk production kept rising in September, while the nation as a whole had its first decline of the year.

The Badger State made 2.18 billion pounds of milk last month. That’s 2.9 percent more than the same month a year ago.

The national milk output dropped by a half-percent, to around 15.7 billion pounds. The 23 major dairy states also had their production drop by a half-percent, as other states had a more difficult time than Wisconsin in dealing with the summer heat wave.

California, the country’s top milk producer, has been struggling for most of the year. And that continued in September, as the Golden State had a 3.9 percent reduction to almost 3.2 billion pounds.

About 7,000 cows were added to Wisconsin’s dairy herd in September, for total of just over 1.25 million. The production per cow increased by 40 pounds, to an average of 1,720.
