It's rare to strike gold, much less platinum on your first time out, but Cher Lloyd has managed to do it. The British pop star has scored her first-ever U.S. platinum single -- signifying one million copies sold -- for "Want U Back," her debut release on this side of the pond. Another new British artist, Alex Clare , scored his first million-seller as well for his hit "Too Close."
Other artists who took home their first-ever platinum single plaques from the Recording Industry Association of America in the past month include Outasight , for "Tonight Is the Night" and American Idol champ Phillip Phillips for "Home."
On the album side, fun. scored its first-ever gold album, signifying sales of half-a-million copies, for Some Nights . The disc has produced two monster hits: the title track and "We Are Young."
Meanwhile, some artists who are old hands at raking in the gold and platinum certifications added even more metal to their walls in the past month. Stronger and Talk That Talk, the latest albums by Kelly Clarkson and Rihanna , respectively, both went platinum, as did Blown Away , the latest from Carrie Underwood .
