MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) - A city ordinance regulating the placement of political signs in Marinette is the basis of a federal lawsuit.

FOX 11 reports the suit, filed by a Marinette resident, says the ordinance is unconstitutionally broad.

According to the suit, the city requires a permit and a $15 fee to be paid before political signs can be displayed. It also says the ordinance is unconstitutional in the time limits it places on when political signs can be placed and when they must be taken down.

The Marinette city attorney tells FOX 11 the ordinance does not apply to residential neighborhoods, but the plaintiff’s attorneys argue the ordinance is so broad the city could apply it to just about any situation.

Failure to follow the ordinance could result in an unspecified fine and up to 30 days in jail for each illegally placed sign.
