Five Green Bay family members could have drug-related trial in January

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Five family members from Green Bay could go on trial in late January, for running a remote marijuana growing operation in which $13 million worth of pot was seized.

Javier and Maria Magana, their son Brian, Javier’s brother Marco, and Manuel Mendoza have until January 9th to enter pleas in federal court in Green Bay. If they don’t, pre-trial conferences would be held at that time.

A jury is now scheduled to hear the case starting January 22nd.

All five are charged with manufacturing marijuana with the intent to sell, in what officials call one of the largest pot-growing operations on record in Wisconsin.

Authorities said the suspects bought 3 properties near Athelstane and grew large pot fields. In May, a fisherman told officers that he was booted out an inlet by two Hispanic men who said, “fishing was closed.”

The fisherman apparently saw that some trees were cut down, and a power cord was stretched over the inlet.

In June, a logger told officers that he ran across a marijuana field. And authorities then kept track of vehicles going in and out of the sites. Two other people were still being sought at last word.
