WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - U.S. House Republican Tom Petri of Fond du Lac is the 25th richest member of Congress.
That’s according to a review by the Washington Post and the Center for Responsive Politics.
They analyzed financial data from each of the 535 House and Senate members. And they listed Petri’s net worth at $28.5 million as of 2010. That’s an increase of 32 percent since 2004.
Federal lawmakers are allowed to be vague about their net worth in their required financial reports. In June, Petri said he was worth anywhere from $9.5 million to $40.5 million – and his biggest asset was his stock in the Walgreens’ drug store chain.
The Post also listed Wausau area Republican Sean Duffy as the 6th-least wealthiest House member, with a net worth of minus-$167,000 as of 2010. He was the Ashland County District Attorney for a number of years before northern Wisconsin voters before being elected to the House in 2010.
Menomonee Falls Republican Jim Sensenbrenner used to be the state’s richest House member for years as an heir to the Kimberly-Clark fortune. But he shed all of stock in the company in recent years, selling many shares and giving others to his children.
Retiring Senate Democrat Herb Kohl continues to be the state’s richest lawmaker on Capitol Hill. The Post report said he’s 5th overall with a net worth of $173 million. His former grocery chain made him wealthy – and he has owned the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks for almost three decades.
