APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - The former treasurer in the Town of Dale learned her fate for stealing thousands of dollars from the small community.
Erica Siewert was sentenced to one year probation Monday in Outagamie County court.
Siewert admitted to using the town credit cards for personal use for 3 years.
In a tearful statement, Siewert admitted she did wrong.
"I would like to apologize to the Town of Dale residents and to the Town of Dale officials, Douglas Wunderlich, who completely trusted me and I betrayed his trust," Siewert said before sentencing, according to FOX 11.
Records show Siewert spent around $28,000 on clothing, food and gas and made more than 500 personal charges to just one card.
Prosecutors say it was due to financial problems at home.
"She knows she had done something wrong. She in fact, turned herself in," said Siewert's attorney James Long.
The state pushed for jail time in addition to probation, but the judge denied the request. If she violates her probation, she faces 90 days in jail.
The town's former clerk, Marcia Kelly, is facing similar charges.
She has pleaded not guilty, and is scheduled to go to trial in December.
