MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - So far, so good for Wisconsin deer hunters – well, a good share of them, anyway.

The state DNR said its preliminary harvest totals are up 19 percent from a year ago for the gun season’s opening weekend.

Registration stations reported 134,772 deer taken on Saturday and Sunday. And the DNR’s Tom Hauge says those numbers will go up once all the registration tag stubs are placed into the state’s database.

Some hunters said they didn’t see many deer – especially in some of the prime hunting areas in northern Wisconsin. But many registration stations said they were busy for much of the weekend, especially on Saturday’s opening day.

Some hunters said they saw lots of deer on the move, as the animals’ mating period coincided with an early hunting start afforded by the calendar.

Hauge said many hunters registered their deer earlier than they would have, so they were not left to hang in the warmer weather – and possibly spoil their venison.
