ALLOUEZ, WI (WTAQ) - An agreement has been reached that merges the Allouez and Green Bay fire departments starting next month.

"While it's the end of 40 years of the Allouez Fire Department," says village president Steve Vanden Avond. "It marks the beginning of a strong and meaningful collaboration between Allouez and the city of Green Bay."

The village willl retain ownership of the fire station on Dauphin Street, which will permanently house a six-person crew. It will now also be called Green Bay Metro Fire Station #8.

Vanden Avond says negotations had been going on for two years.

"It had to provide as good or better service than we have in the village now, and it had to come at the same or a lower cost and we've acheived both of those objectives with this agreement," says Vanden Avond.

Besides fire services, the Green Bay Metro Fire Department will also provide code enforcement, inspections, EMS billing and collection, training and emergency management services to the village of Allouez.

Green Bay interim fire chief Mike Nieft says the new merger will roll out December 2nd.
