Ray Nitschke, Leo Frigo memorial bridges to open this week

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Two well-traveled Green Bay bridges will be fully operational this week week after a combined seven months of repairs.

The Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge and the Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge will be fully operational by the weekend.

The Leo Frigo bridge along Interstate 43 will open on Thursday.

Since June, lanes in both directions have been narrowed down to one lane.

Crews have been repairing the bridge skeleton as well as fixing pavement joints and entrance and exit ramps.  WisDOT says they had replace sections of pavement as old as the bridge that opened in 1981.

More than 43,000 vehicles traveled the bridge daily.

Work is not done and the Leo Frigo will see construction start up again come the spring, bringing along with it lane closures again.

By the start of next week, traffic in downtown Green Bay will be less congested after the Ray Nitschke bridge becomes operational again.

It’s been closed since the beginning of September.

Also known as the Main Street Bridge, more than 18,000 vehicles traveled over the bridge daily.  Inspectors found an unexpected build-up of rust on the counter weight system of the lift bridge.

Repair costs were estimated at $625,000 and needed to be done before a larger problem developed.

The Main Street bridge is expected to reopen Saturday.
