The De Pere Redbirds made it back to the WIAA Girls State Volleyball Tournament at the Resch Center for the second straight year but on Thursday night, they had the unenviable task of drawing defending Division 1 champion and number one ranked Burlington in the Quarterfinals. The Demons were just too powerful for the Classic Conference co-champs in sweeping their way to the semifinals 25-18, 25-8 and 25-17. De Pere flashed a lot of energy and helped by service errors from the favorites, held a 15-13 lead in the opening game. Burlington repeatedly turned to their 6-3 senior, Ciara Capezio, a University of Minnesota recruit, who drove home a game high 27 kills. The Redbirds looked rattled in the second set and fought gamely in the third but didn't have enough. Alexis Bergman led De Pere with six kills while Corryn Ginnow closed out her career with 16 assists and 8 digs. De Pere finshed 28-14. Burlington will meet Menomonee Falls in the semifinals. The Indians swept past Sun Prairie in three straight games. In the afternoon session, Neenah took the opening set but Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels came back with the next three to advance against Merrill. The Blue Jays, making their first trip to state in 30 years, improved to 42-3 by beating perennial power Muskego 3 games to 1. Semifinals in all four divisions take place Friday with championship matches Saturday at the Resch Center.
