UNDATED (WSAU) Kraft Foods says it will cut 1600 jobs in North America. But Madison will continue to be the headquarters for its Oscar Mayer hot dog and lunch meat products. And the city will have about a dozen of the job cuts.
Mayor Paul Soglin said Kraft recognized the “excellent work done in Madison” in keeping its Oscar Mayer headquarters there. Jenn Post Tyler of the region’s economic development group called the decision a “vote of confidence” that will send positive signals to other businesses and entrepreneurs in the Madison area.
Kraft Foods is based in Northfield Illinois. The company says most of the job cuts will involve sales and office positions, and none will involve Madison’s factory workers. The reductions will be made throughout the year, and about 20-percent of the total jobs to be eliminated are now vacant.
Last summer Kraft said it would split into two independent companies – a grocery business in North America, and a worldwide snacks business.
