Travel not recommended during storm

UNDATED (WRN)  Travel is not recommended today across most of Wisconsin, with all but the far northwestern corner of the state out of the line of a dangerous winter storm which could dump up to 14 inches of wet, heavy snow in some locations.

Four to six inches of snow was possible overnight, according to Rudy Scharr with National Weather Service in Sullivan, with another six to nine inches possible through the day. “The big story will be the wind speed,” said Scharr, with gusts out off the northwest expected to hit 40 miles an hour. “We would hope people would not be on the road with those kind of conditions.”

“Travel is likely to be hazardous over the next two days across much of the state,” said Anne Reshadi with the state Department of Transportation. “Heavy snow and high winds will result in blizzard conditions and hazardous driving.” DOT recommends no travel today, but if you must be on the roads, Reshadi recommends checking conditions by calling 511 or logging on to 511wi.gov.

“It looks like it’s going to be a wet, heavy snow,” said the Weather Service’s Scharr. “One of the big problems with the wet heavy snow is some of the older people, or people with medical conditions, trying to get out there and shovel. Make sure to check in on your neighbors.”
