KIMBERLY, WI (WTAQ) - A Fox Valley boy with a rare skin disease will be able to attend school in the Kimberly school district.

That's after officials in Kimberly, Kaukauna and the family of Charlie Knuth agreed to a plan Tuesday.

"We were able to get the family registered in Kaukauna, they have now filed for acception into open enrollment and we will accept," says Kimberly Schools Superintendent Bob Mayfield. "We hope to have services by the end of the week."

Mayfield says understanding the district's position was difficult to get across.

"I think one of the challenges to this is that there have been options to this all along, they just haven't been accepted," says Mayfield. "It was one of those things where you continue to communicate and work together to find a solution, and that's what happened here."

Trisha Knuth, Charlie's mom, says he has been open enrolled in the Kimberly district since 2010. She says Kimberly terminated his enrollment while he was in the hospital, then denied re-enrollment. She brought the issue in front of the Kimberly School Board Monday night.

Mayfield says he's sympathetic to a parent fighting for their child.

"I do wish she would've understood our technicalities better, however, as a parent you need to do what's right for your child and for your family, so advocating for your child is never the wrong thing to do," says Mayfield.

Trisha Knuth did not return our call seeking comment.
