COLUMBUS, WI (WTAQ) - The Ohio State University has fired former Olympic medalist Paul Hamm (HOM) after his arrest in a Columbus suburb.

Hamm grew up in Waukesha. He has been an assistant gymnastics coach at the University since June.

Hamm was charged last Saturday with assault in connection with an incident involving a taxi cab driver. He was accused of hitting and kicking the cab driver, damaging a window in the cab and refusing to pay a $23 fare.

Hamm is free on bond pending arraignment next week.

The university says it has high standards for its coaching staff, saying Hamm failed to meet those standards.

His termination is effective immediately.
