Federal judge in Ohio halts Tuesday execution

COLUMBUS (Reuters) - A federal judge on Monday halted for now the execution of a man accused of a double homicide in Cincinnati in 1984.

Daniel Lee Bedford, 63, was scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection on Tuesday. His defense attorneys have argued for clemency, citing dementia and mental retardation.

The Ohio Attorney General's office is filing an appeal with the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to object to the stay, which was granted by U.S. District Judge Algenon L. Marbley in Columbus.

Bedford was accused of shooting to death his ex-girlfriend Gwen Toepfert and her boyfriend John Smith.

Bedford told the state parole board in March that he does not remember the slayings.
