Brewers Welcome Pirates Tonight

Milwaukee, wi (WSAU) The Milwaukee Brewers will open a three-game series against Pittsburgh tonight at Miller Park. The Brewers have dominated the Pirates in recent years. But now, Pittsburgh is two games ahead of Milwaukee in the National League Central standings. The Pirates are in third place at 18-and-19, three-and-a-half games behind front-running Saint Louis. The Brew Crew is two games behind Pittsburgh in fifth place at 16-and-21. One reason for the Pirates’ improvement is an 11-and-8 road record. Another is strong starting pitching. Four of their five starters have E-R-A’s of three-point-six-two or lower. Milwaukee was off yesterday. The Pirates started a game at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers. But the rains came in the second inning with the Dodgers up 1-to-nothing. They hung around for a few hours before the game was finally called off. Right-hander Yovani Gallardo will start the Brewers tonight against Pittsburgh right-hander James McDonald.

Brewers’ reliever Zach Braddock struck out all five batters he faced last night in a minor league rehab start for the Class-“A” Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin won the game over Cedar Rapids, 5-to-3. But the deciding run wasn’t scored until later on – so Braddock didn’t get the win. He’s recovering from a sleep disorder, and he’s not scheduled to come off the 15-day disabled list until Monday. It’s not certain whether Braddock will make another rehab start before being called up.
