LITTLE CHUTE, Wis. (WTAQ) - An autopsy will be performed Monday on an elderly woman found dead after a fire destroyed her Fox Valley apartment.
The state Fire Marshal is helping local investigators determine the cause of the blaze, which started Sunday morning in Little Chute. The apartment was above an unattached residential garage.
Outagamie County Coroner Ruth Wulgaert said firefighters did not know the woman was inside, so her body wasn’t found until after the blaze was put out. She’s said to be in her 70’s, but Wulgaert said she has not been positively identified.
Fire officials said the apartment and the garage were engulfed in flames when units arrived, and there was a live power line across the front of building. It took an hour for utility officials to cut off the electricity – and firefighters had to stay back until then. But assistant fire chief Mark Jensen said it did not play a role in the woman’s death.
