Woman plummets to death hiking near Denver's Red Rocks

DENVER (Reuters) - A young woman plunged 100 feet to her death on Friday while hiking at the Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre west of Denver, authorities said.

Cindy Matthews, spokeswoman for the West Metro Fire Protection District, said emergency crews were summoned to the park, a popular hiking area in addition to concert venue, at mid-afternoon on reports of a fallen hiker.

When crews responded to the scene they pronounced the unidentified woman dead, Matthews said. She was in her 20s.

A concert featuring folk artist Ray LaMontagne was scheduled for the famous natural sandstone amphitheatre on Friday night.

Mark Techmeyer, spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, said the woman fell below the amphitheatre, which forced the closure of one road leading into the park.

The incident was under investigation.
