MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A soldier from Wisconsin has died in the line of duty in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense says 19-year-old Private Ryan Larson was killed when his unit was attacked Wednesday by insurgents armed with explosive devices.

Larson, who's from Friendship in central Wisconsin, was assigned to the 1st Battalion based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

He was a 2010 graduate of Adams Friendship High School.

Governor Scott Walker released the following statement:

"Private Ryan Larson gave his life so that we may enjoy the blessings of a free society. We are forever indebted to Private Larson and those like him who have died to protect our nation and our way of life. Tonette and I are saddened by his loss and our prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time."
