Lake Michigan Lighthouse for sale in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - The federal government has been selling lighthouses on the Great Lakes for years.

Now, a high-profile structure in Milwaukee is on the block. The Coast Guard will offer The Breakwater Lighthouse on the Milwaukee harbor to a local government or a non-profit group that promises to maintain it.

If those groups don’t want it, the lighthouse would go to the highest private bidder. But it might be hard for a resident to consider moving there. That’s because breakwaters make it difficult to get across part of Lake Michigan, and park a boat there. Also, the Coast Guard would keep running the light beacon and the foghorn – and the horn gets loud.

Terry Pepper of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association said the Milwaukee building was put up in 1926 as one of the last such facilities on the Great Lakes. Pepper said lighthouses are not as necessary as they used to be, but he hopes somebody with historical interest and lots of money will buy the facility.

Non-profit groups have until August first to express an interest to the General Services Administration. After that, it will be auctioned off.

Officials say lighthouses have gone for anywhere from two-thousand dollars to a half-million – and some need major renovations.
