Sen. Ron Johnson loses bid for vice-chair of GOP Conference

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson will have to wait awhile before he becomes a top leader in the United States Senate. The first-year Republican lost his bid Tuesday for the vice-chairmanship of the Senate’s GOP Conference. It’s the party’s fifth-highest ranking leadership post in the chamber – and it’s been 60 years since a senator with less seniority than Johnson won the post. It went to veteran Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri. Johnson said this afternoon he was “tremendously grateful” for the support he received from his colleagues. He also admitted it was “relatively audacious” for a first-year lawmaker to seek a leadership post. But Johnson said he did it because quote, “Washington is bankrupting this nation” due to the lack of Democratic leadership in his chamber and the White House. As a former Oshkosh businessman, Johnson said he’s used to trying to fix something that’s broken. And quote, “I’m not gonna change – I’m pretty tenacious.”
