(Reuters) - The slumping Los Angeles Kings have fired coach Terry Murray and named assistant John Stevens as interim coach, the National Hockey League (NHL) team said on Monday.

Stevens previously coached the Philadelphia Flyers from 2006 through most of 2009.

Murray's firing comes with the Kings (13-12-4) on a four-game losing streak and ranked 12th in the 15-team Western Conference. They are the lowest scoring team in the conference.

Murray, 61, is the fifth NHL coach to be fired this season, joining St. Louis' Davis Payne, Washington's Bruce Boudreau, Carolina's Paul Maurice and Anaheim's Randy Carlyle.

He had been the Kings coach since the 2008-09 NHL campaign and compiled a 139-106-30 regular season record. He previously coached at Washington, Philadelphia and Florida.

Stevens, 45, posted a 120-109-34 record with the Flyers, a team he led to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2008.

He has been with the Kings since the 2010-11 season.
