(Reuters) - The Pentagon Thursday released the names of the troops killed when Taliban militants shot down their helicopter Saturday in the deadliest incident involving U.S. troops in the nearly decade-old Afghan war.

The military's Special Operations Command had objected to releasing the names of those dead, most of them members of the elite Navy SEALs. Sources familiar with the matter said there were concerns about the safety of Navy SEAL families.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta opted to uphold Pentagon policy and publish the names. Still, details about the specific units the U.S. forces were assigned to were often omitted.
