Fire destroys 3 downtown Cassville buildings

CASSVILLE, Wis. (WTAQ) - A huge fire in downtown Cassville destroyed three buildings and damaged at least two others today.

It started around three a-m in an apartment – and officials said it quickly spread to two adjacent buildings. Eight apartments were destroyed, and 12 people lost their homes. A popular café was also damaged.

Several fire-fighters were treated for hypothermia, but no other injuries have been reported.

Village Clerk Marlene Esser said the blaze occurred in an historic part of downtown Cassville, which is located along the Mississippi River in far southwest Wisconsin.

Esser said two public works employees first noticed the fire while they were staffing pumps in Cassville due to flooding on the river. She said one worker called 911, while another knocked doors to get people out of their apartments.

The Red Cross is helping those who’ve been displaced. Firefighters from Cassville, Lancaster, Glen Haven, Potosi, and Bloomington have been helping with the blaze.
