The Milwaukee Brewers completed a three game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates to finish off a season opening 5-2 homestand at American Family Field. Brandon Woodruff was on his game for a second straight start in the 4-2 victory Wednesday afternoon, taking a no hitter into the sixth inning. He gave up only an infield roller up the third base line before finishing his day with a nine strikeout performance.
Rowdy Tellez staked Woodruff to an early lead with a second inning solo home run, this third of the year. It stayed 1-0 until Keston Hiura delivered a three run blast in the bottom of the 7th. The Pirates got on the board in the eighth, as Brent Suter gave up a pair a singles and he gave way to Devin Williams who allowed a two run single to Ke’Bryan Hayes. Josh Hader came on for the ninth and finished it up for his sixth save of the year.
The Brewers (8-5) remain a game behind St. Louis in the NL Central as the Cardinals improved to 7-3 with a 2-0 shutout over Miami. Milwaukee will enjoy a day off Thursday before opening up a weekend series in Philadelphia on Friday night.
