Packers' Burnett out for season with knee injury

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Green Bay Packers rookie safety Morgan Burnett will undergo season-ending knee surgery after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday's win over Detroit, coach Mike McCarthy said on Monday.

"I just came from the meeting with the medical staff and Morgan Burnett suffered an ACL tear in yesterday's game, and he will be lost for the season," McCarthy told reporters.

"It's very disappointing for him as an individual just because of what he's put into it from the time he's been here, to have to grow up that fast, and he was getting better with each week."

Green Bay's third-round pick in this year's draft, Burnett had been pushed into a starting role after Atari Bigby had ankle surgery at the start of training camp.

Burnett had 14 tackles and one interception in four games this season.

With Bigby not yet ready to return, McCarthy said he was uncertain who would start at safety on Sunday when the Packers travel to Washington to face the Redskins.
