SHAWANO, Wis. (WTAQ) - Authorities say a fire early Sunday led to the discovery of a meth lab inside a downtown Shawano apartment.
Crews get the call to 144 South Main Street just after Midnight.
Police arrived to help firefighters determine that meth was being cooked inside the kitchen.
Police say evidence indicates at least 2 people were in the apartment, but no one was there when authorities arrived.
Investigators are looking for those individuals at this time. Police Chief Ed Whealon says it's the first meth lab discovery in Shawano County and is thankful someone not living at the apartment spotted the blaze and called authorities.
"This could've been some real devastating consequences for downtown," Whealon says. "Luckily someone called us right away."
Whealon says a company based out of Illinois, Chicago Crime Scene Clean-up, was handling the cleaning of the apartment, which police and agents from the Department of Criminal Investigation conducted a search of during the day Sunday.
