Florida house fire kills 5 children in family

MIAMI (Reuters) - Five children, all brothers and sisters in the same family, died after a fire engulfed a wooden home in central Florida, an emergency official said on Tuesday.

The three boys and two girls were between 6 and 15 years old, said Miranda Iglesias, a spokeswoman for the Marion County fire department.

Firefighters battling the blaze pulled the two girls from a window but they died at a nearby hospital. The boys were trapped inside as the fire swept through the house.

The children's 21-year-old aunt suffered severe burns on her face, back and arms, while their mother, 31, and grandmother, 54, escaped the flames that burned down the home in the village of Citra in Marion County.

Neighbors called 911 when they heard the women screaming.

Iglesias said fire officials were investigating whether a space heater in the living room may have caused the fire, which did not appear to be suspicious.
