Lawsuit continues over Wisconsin's same-sex partner registry

by

UNDATED (WSAU) The Wisconsin Family Action group says it will press on with its lawsuit to strike down the state’s legal protections for same-sex couples. Now that Republicans have full control at the State Capitol, there’s talk that the Legislature will repeal the domestic partner registry that Democrats put in place 15 months ago.

But the gay rights’ group Fair Wisconsin says it won’t take those efforts lying down. Director Katie Belanger believes hope group has momentum on its side. And she says they’ll keep working to quote, “address the lack of legal protections that same-sex couples face in this state every day.”

Belanger says Governor-elect Scott Walker and his lieutenant Rebecca Kleefisch have been very clear in their opposition to domestic partnerships. And they’ll be prepared to defend the registry. Some G-O-P lawmakers say it’s not a priority at the moment – because voters made it clear that they want the state’s budget and economic problems to be addressed first.

But Assembly Democrat Penny Bernard-Schaber of Appleton believes the G-O-P will try to end the domestic partner registry – which gives same-sex couples about one-fifth the legal benefits of married couples.
