MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - The Vatican says a new lawsuit filed in Milwaukee against the pope and Catholic church leaders is a “publicity stunt with no merit.” The suit was filed Thursday by one of the 200 deaf students whom the late Father Lawrence Murphy was accused of molesting many years ago at a school in Saint Francis.
Attorney Jeff Anderson said the lawsuit would order the Vatican to release files on thousands of alleged abusive priests throughout the world. Anderson says those cases could then be investigated and prosecuted. The suit also seeks unspecified financial damages for the deaf student.
Vatican attorney Jeffrey Lena says the new suit, “rehashes old theories already rejected by U.S. courts.” The suit follows the recent revelation that the Vatican ignored calls by Milwaukee’s former archbishop to defrock Murphy in the 1990’s – and they avoided a trial from being held in his case.
