PITTSBURGH (TSN-WSAU) - Casey McGehee, Corey Hart, Ryan Braun, and Rickie Weeks each drove in two runs, as the Milwaukee Brewers dominated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-1, in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park.
Hart hit a solo homer for the Brewers, who have won two in a row and improved to 3-4 on a nine-game road trip. Alcides Escobar went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the victors.
Dave Bush (1-0) tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits while walking four and striking out two. The right-hander improved to 4-4 in 13 careers games (12 starts) against Pittsburgh.
Lastings Milledge knocked in the lone run for the Pirates, who had won four of five coming in. Andrew McCutchen went 3-for-4 with a run scored in defeat.
Charlie Morton (0-3) continued to struggle, giving up six runs -- five earned -- on six hits in one-plus innings of work. He also walked three batters to drop to 0-3 in three career starts against Milwaukee.
The Brewers dominated play from the start, scoring seven runs over the first three frames. Jim Edmonds got things started in the top of the first with a one-out double to right. Braun drove in Edmonds with a double to left-center. After Prince Fielder walked, Braun crossed the plate on McGehee's base hit up the middle. Center fielder McCutchen was unable to cleanly field McGehee's hit, allowing the runners to advance to second and third. Hart's RBI groundout made it 3-0.
Pittsburgh loaded the bases in the home half without getting a hit, but Jeff Clement flied out to end the threat.
Milwaukee plated three more runs in the second to go ahead 6-0. Escobar doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Weeks' single. The bases were loaded following an Edmonds single. Braun then walked to force in Bush, who walked. Brian Burres took over on the mound and got Fielder to foul out, but McGehee knocked in another run with a sac fly.
In the third, Weeks hit an RBI triple to right to make it a seven-run game.
After failing to score a run in the fourth, Hart got the Brewers' offense going again with a solo shot to right in the fifth for an 8-0 lead.
Pittsburgh scored a run off Chris Narveson in the eighth. McCutchen hit a one-out double to center and scored on Milledge's double to right-center. Narveson retired the next two batters to get out of the frame.
The Pirates and Brewers continue their series Wednesday at 5:30pm.
