Now that it's 2013 I really want to learn how to play guitar this year. That is one of my New Years resolution.

Do you have any tips for me on what type of guitar I should purchase, should I teach myself or take lessons? 

I don't want to pay a lot of money for a guitar. I would even get a nice used one too! I would appreciate your help and advice :)
