PARENTS!! What you need to know about Snapchat

Have you heard about Snapchat? Are you following your kids on Instagram? If not...it's time. If they're on Twitter, I'd suggest following on there too.

Snapchat is a photo app popular with high school and college kids.

Users can take photos of themselves or their surroundings and send it to their friends. The hook is, it's just a "snap". The photo self-destructs after just a few short seconds.

So many kids use it to send naughty pics that they don't want saved forever and passed around to others.

But keep in mind, the photos don't REALLY destruct forever. Users can take a screen shot of the photo before it disappears, or take a picture of their screen with another phone or camera. Snapchat does send a message to a user if their picture has been captured with a screen shot.

While many parents worry about the dangers of sexting with this app, one social media professor feels that once it's been studied many will be surprised that sexting isn't as pervasive on the app as silly pictures of friends and cats.
