The second week of the Pack's organized team activities was spiced up by the triumphant return of Dancing With The Stars champion Donald Driver. He showed off his mirror ball trophy, took some good natured ribbing and then signed a new contract that Driver says will keep him a Packer for life. The 37 year old agreed to a restructured deal that will cut his base salary in half, from 5 to 2.5 million dollars but a reported half-million dollars in guaranteed money suggests the team will find room on the roster for their all-time leading receiver.
The Packers signed a rookie free agent tight end on Wednesday. Brandon Bostick was in town during the rookie orientation camp on a tryout basis. Bostick (6-3, 245) played his college ball at Newberry College in South Carolina where he caught 136 passes for 1935 yards and 19 touchdowns in his career.
The team's second of three public workouts was held in overcast, cool and damp conditions Wednesday. A steady drizzle fell through most of the practice. With a couple of fullbacks sporting minor injuries, rookie free agent Nic Cooper of Winston-Salem State worked with the first team offense lined up in front of James Starks. Former Kansas City Chief Herb Taylor played with the first string offensive line at left tackle. Derrick Sherrod is still recovering from his broken leg and Marshall Newhouse, the expected successor to Chad Clifton, wasn't on the practice field.
Free agent defensive end Phillip Merling, the former Miami Dolphins second round draft choice out of Clemson had travel issues according to Mike McCarthy and he's due to join the team for the final week of OTA's next week. Merling is among three veteran free agents signed to a veteran minimum, one year contract this off-season, joining Anthony Hargrove and Daniel Muir. Throw in Jerel Worthy and Mike Daniels from the draft, no other position has had as large an infusion of bodies to compete for jobs this summer. It's one of the topics discussed by McCarthy and players in the lockeroom after the workout. Along with Donald Driver's new deal and A.J. Hawk's new look, listen to the post practice quotes on the link below.
